Caitlin Werrell

I am a painter based in Tropea, Italy. I like to paint shadows and light. There are very nice shadows and light here. I paint the structures – the cliffside, the buildings, the shoreline. These are a mixture of the breakdown and build up of shells over millions of years, and the dwellings on top of those shells and sand that were carved and stacked by those whose lives are a distant memory. All look stable, solid, unyielding. They are actually quite fragile, transient. These paintings aim to capture just a moment of this long stretch of time.

I am also the Co-Founder of The Council on Strategic Risks and The Center for Climate and Security. I studied at Oxford University and Mount Holyoke College (water & environmental politics and studio art). I live with my partner, Francesco Femia, and puppy dog, Gelsomina.

Sono un pittore con la mia base a Tropea. Mi piace dipingere la luce e l’ombra. C’è una luce ed un’ombra che è molto bella qui. Sopratutto, dipingo le strutture: la rupe, gli edifici, la costa. Questi sono un misto della rottura e dell’accumulo di conchiglie nel corso di milioni di anni, e le abitazioni in cima a quelle conchiglie e sabbia che sono state scolpite e accatastate da coloro le cui vite sono un lontano ricordo. Tutti sembrano stabili, solidi ed inflessibili. In realtà, sono piuttosto fragili e transitori. Questi dipinti tentano di catturare solo un momento di questo lungo lasso di tempo.

Sono anche Co-fondatore del Council on Strategic Risks e del Center for Climate and Security. Ho studiato all’Università di Oxford ed al Mount Holyoke College (scienza politica dell’acqua e dell’ambiente, e le belle arti). Vivo con il mio marito, Francesco Femia, e la mia cucciola, Gelsomina.
